The month kicks off with the trance-like collages of Gerald van der Kaap and ends with an intimate evening devoted to This Nameless Spectacle by Jesper Just. In between we highly recommend two special programmes organized by Sonic Acts and the Researchlabs where you can indulge yourself in the creative world of art students.

Beyond Index
6 February 19.15
New media pioneer Gerald van der Kaap created a film artwork about a group of Chinese art students copying paintings by European masters. The trance-like collages recall some of van der Kaap’s best work. Van der Kaap was one of the first VJs in the 1990s. The screening is introduced by Hripsimé Visser (Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam) and followed by a Q&A with Gerald van der Kaap.

Researchlabs: 8 art academies and universities

Today we give the floor to a new crop of curators and artists, with students from eight art academies and universities putting together a programme of new work, remixes of films or short historical avant-garde films from EYE’s collection. We end the day with a spectacular programme presented by the VJAcademy.

Time Passes
22 February 16.30
A controversial Norwegian art project highlights the potential and limitation of politically engaged art, in this documentary-like film by artist Ane Hjort Guttu. In association with Sonic Acts Academy, preceded by a talk by Hjort Guttu, who will also present some of her previous work. Followed by a Q&A.

Jesper Just – Choreographing the Soft Matter
27 February 19.15
A special evening devoted to This Nameless Spectacle, a film by the Danish artist Jesper Just, who is currently the subject of an exhibition in EYE. There’s no escaping the sense of voyeurism in this film – a feeling that is as intimate as it is uncomfortable. Curator Nina Folkersma explores Just’s work in greater detail.
